America’s Oldest Car Collection – The cars that started it all

Audrain Motorsport is thrilled to invite you to see the Larz Anderson Collection and experience over 120 years of automobile history.

Just ten minutes from downtown Boston, nestled inside the beautiful Larz Anderson Park, the Museum is home to “America’s Oldest Car Collection”. These automobiles form the Museum’s permanent collection and are housed within the Carriage House, built in 1888 and designed by the city architect of Boston, Edmund M. Wheelwright, who was also responsible for several notable Boston structures like the Boston Public Library.

Larz and Isabel Anderson began their love affair with the automobile before the turn of the century. In 1899, soon after they married, they purchased an 1899 Winton Runabout, a true horseless carriage. From 1899 to 1948 the Andersons purchased at least thirty-two new motorcars, in addition to numerous carriages, thus creating “America’s Oldest Car Collection”.

As the cars became obsolete, they would be retired to the Carriage House, and, by 1927, the Andersons had opened the Carriage House for tours of their “ancient” vehicles. When Isabel Anderson passed away in 1948, she bequeathed her entire Brookline estate, including the mansion, Carriage House, and land to the Town of Brookline. She stipulated in her will that the motorcar collection be known as the “Larz Anderson Collection.” Fourteen of the original thirty-two vehicles remain in the collection.

The Veteran Motor Car Club of America (VMCCA) opened the Antique Auto Museum at Larz Anderson Park in October 1949. Families proudly displayed their vintage motorcars, competed in lawn games, and enjoyed picnic lunches on the grassy slopes of the Polo Field. On display were fifteen Anderson automobiles, twenty-four carriages, and six sleighs.

Since the Grand Opening over sixty years ago, the Museum has grown into a major New England non-profit educational institution with community events, lectures, children’s programs, walking tours of the Anderson Park, and an ever-changing series of exhibits on the Andersons, the automobile and its impact on society and our culture.

Lunch at the Alden Castle

After the Larz Anderson collection, we will drive the few minutes to the Alden Castle where we will have a private lunch in the beautiful Modern Club Room. A leisurely lunch has been planned to enable you to enjoy the fine architectural details of this restaurant, one of Boston’s most iconic destinations. The historic Alden Park Manor royal crests and white-washed paneling balance Old-World grace with modern charm, while the soaring windows create a truly dramatic setting.

Rare Precious Metals Collection

After lunch, a short 15 minute drive through the Cottage Farm Historic District of Boston, will bring us to one of America’s most private car collections where we will finish the day in dramatic style. We have been granted privileged access to the Rare Precious Metals car collection which is home to some spectacular cars that are only occasionally seen by the general public. We will have plenty of time to see the entire collection and learn more about the cars before we depart for home. The owner has requested that no photographs be taken during our visit.
