Who is Judy Stropus?
Well consider the most famous names on the American Racing scene – Roger Penske, Bud Moore, Chip Ganassi, Jeff Gordon, Tony Schumacher, John Force, Juan Montoya, Mario Andretti, Dan Gurney, Al Holbert, Mark Donohue, Hurley Haywood, Scott Pruett. We all know of these icons, but they all know and knew Judy Stropus - affectionately and with great respect.
A car enthusiast from a young age, Judy was a successful racer herself in SCCA events. Then, in the late ’60s, her uncanny ability to accurately time up to 100 cars at the same time over the course of a race – even a 24-hour race – became a critical asset to the top teams. This is before computers, before digital stopwatches, and most amazingly, before women were allowed into some garage areas, including those at the Indianapolis 500.
For Judy this was just the beginning. The respect she earned for her scoring charts became equaled by the respect she earned for her work in PR for top teams and manufacturers. Her contributions extend beyond timing, writing, and PR. So much so that she has been inducted into the Motorsport Hall of Fame of America, The International Motorsports Hall of Fame, and is a full member of the Road Racing Drivers Club while serving on their board.
“Judy is always somewhere and always doing something and that something is always important,’’ said famed driver Lyn St. James. “She’s never a hanger-on. She’s always there in a capacity that’s important, and you never know what that capacity may be.
This evening will truly be one of a lifetime. A story of racing through pictures; inside the garages and the pits; at leisure with the drivers, team owners and mechanics; in the middle of the tension of hot competition, as lived and told by an exceptional person who relatively few outside the motorsport profession know. A person whose hard work, intelligence and sincerity has been admired by all who have had the privilege to have her acquaintance. You will be astonished.
Judy Stropus was part of the Right Bra team in 1972 of three women dressed in pink bell-bottoms and bodysuits, and portrayed loosely by Adrienne Barbeau in the movie “Cannonball Run”.
